The Micro-organism Genome Research Group works on several fronts. The laboratories investigate microbiological contamination of food products and the environment, as well as veterinary samples, using molecular biology techniques. The laboratory offers whole genome sequencing, the most advanced method available for characterising micro-organisms, which provides a wealth of information on bacterial virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance genes and genetic relationships between micro-organisms. BIOR is the first institute in Latvia to start epidemiological investigation of foodborne outbreaks using whole genome sequence analysis. In addition to pathogen diagnostics, laboratory testing of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food products and animal feed is also provided, as well as genetic tracing of cattle is offered to animal owners. In addition to diagnostic testing, the Group’s experts are actively involved in various scientific projects.
