In 2023, BIOR Institute built and inaugurated the “Tome Fish Farm” innovation infrastructure centre of national importance in aquaculture” under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) project No 19-00-F02201-000002 under the measure “Innovation”.
The Aquaculture Innovation Infrastructure Centre acts as a base for the development and implementation of innovations in the aquaculture sector. The total area of the building is 1513m². It houses nine different recirculating aquaculture lines for broodstock rearing (quarantine, overwintering), egg incubation, larval rearing, larval feeding, juvenile rearing and one live feed line.
The systems built are a set of innovative infrastructure solutions, equipped with the world’s latest technologies and solutions. The energy efficiency of the complex is ensured by solar panels and heat pumps.
In the long term, the systems will enable BIOR researchers to carry out applied research in aquaculture, to develop methodologies for breeding various valuable fish species, and to genetically improve existing or future breeding stock. The systems will allow the rearing of juvenile fish under controlled conditions for the replenishment of Latvian water bodies within the framework of the Fish Resources Replenishment Plan. For the first time in Latvia, an infrastructure base has been created where entrepreneurs and students will be able to learn the theoretical basics and practice the breeding methods developed at the Centre for various fish species, and acquire the necessary skills in egg production, incubation, larval feeding and nursery.
The total project cost is EUR 4 993 282,81 (including VAT21%).
The project is fully funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF).
