The fish hatchery began its operations in 1986. It was built as a compensation hatchery for the losses caused by the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant. The Dole fish hatchery is the only specialized vimba fry hatchery in the Baltic Sea basin. Since 2017, pike fry have also been bred.

Currently, the hatchery releases at least 170,000 Baltic salmon smolt fry, 420,000 vimba and whitefish fry, and 5,000,000 lamprey and pike larvae annually into the Daugava and Lielupe river basins. Additionally, rainbow trout are also bred at the hatchery.
