The Marine Division conducts research in the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Riga, and the coastal marine areas by organizing research expeditions and surveys. The aim is to collect biological data on commercially significant fish species, such as herring, sprat, cod, and flounder, as well as other fish species within the framework of biodiversity monitoring.
The collected biological data, along with fisheries statistics, are used annually to assess the status of fish stocks and develop forecasts. To evaluate the spawning success of pelagic fish and determine stock recruitment in the open Baltic Sea, ichthyoplankton (fish eggs and larvae) surveys are conducted.
For assessing the environmental condition of the Baltic Sea, oceanographic and hydro-meteorological observations are also carried out.
