The Scientific Institute “BIOR”, in cooperation with the Latvian Council of Science (LCS), is implementing the research project No. 1.1.1.9/LZP/1/24/122 titled “Exploring the potential of native conifer products for honey bee protection”

Within the framework of the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027, under Specific Objective 1.1.1 “Strengthening research and innovation capacity and the introduction of advanced technologies within the overall R&I system”, and Measure 1.1.1.9 “Postdoctoral Research” (Project Agreement No. 1.1.1.9/1/24/I/001), the research project No. 1.1.1.9/LZP/1/24/122 titled “Exploring the potential of native conifer products for honey bee protection” was launched on 1 July 2025.

The project is implemented by Ronalds Krams, a researcher at the Scientific Institute “BIOR”.

Project Objective: The goal of the research is to evaluate the potential of FITESTEN®, a pine needle-based product manufactured in Latvia, focusing on its phytoactive compounds and their possible effects on honey bee protection and health improvement.

The project aligns with the “Knowledge-Intensive Bioeconomy” priority area of Latvia’s Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3) and addresses challenges in the apiculture sector by developing innovative, resource-efficient solutions that utilize local raw materials for the creation of high value-added products.

As part of the research activities, the locally produced pine needle extract product FITESTEN® will be tested in situ against standard substances and control groups. The aim is to assess its stimulating effect on honey bee immune system responses, and to explore its potential new use in protecting honey bees from Varroa mite-induced infections and improving overwintering success. This research project is a non-commercial industrial study.
