Within the framework of the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027, under Specific Objective 1.1.1 “Strengthening research and innovation capacity and the introduction of advanced technologies within the overall R&I system”, and Measure 1.1.1.9 “Postdoctoral Research” (Project Agreement No. 1.1.1.9/1/24/I/001), the research project No. 1.1.1.9/LZP/1/24/124, titled “From Data to Decisions: Smart Tools for Food Safety Risk Assessment and Prioritization”, was launched on 1 July 2025.
The project is implemented by researcher Jānis Ruško from the Scientific Institute “BIOR.”
Project Aim: The main goal of the research is to develop advanced, data-driven decision support tools that integrate New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and machine learning to enable dynamic risk classification and prioritization of chemical contaminants in food. These tools will enhance food safety monitoring and optimize resource allocation, ultimately contributing to public health protection.
The project promotes knowledge transfer and innovation, which are essential for strengthening scientific capacity and increasing Latvia’s competitiveness. It aligns with the objectives of Latvia’s Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3), particularly in the area of knowledge-intensive bioeconomy, by improving food safety systems, fostering innovation, and strengthening the competitiveness of Latvia’s food industry.
The developed tools will support the maintenance of high food safety standards, which are crucial for both the domestic market and exports-thereby promoting economic growth and societal well-being.
