The Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) has announced the most significant scientific achievements in Latvia for 2025, concluding the evaluation of applications submitted to its annual competition. Out of a total of 55 applications in various fields of science, the Academy has selected 12 outstanding scientific works as winners. Among them is the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR”, confirming the Institute’s important contribution to Latvian and international science.
BIOR has received recognition for comprehensive studies conducted in Latvia on the epidemiology, surveillance and control of African swine fever (ASF). These studies have provided a foundation for widely cited international research and recommendations for disease control. BIOR’s research has documented the initial spread of ASF in wild boar and domestic pig populations, analysed the effectiveness of biosecurity measures and identified the most common shortcomings. The data obtained have also been used to model the dynamics of ASF spread in wild boar populations.
Alongside BIOR, this year’s laureates include the University of Latvia, the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, the Biomedical Research and Study Centre, Riga Technical University, the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, the National Library of Latvia, and other leading scientific institutions.

The LAS competition for the most significant scientific achievements of the year has been held since 2002, and in 2025 it took place for the 24th time. Since 2011, laureates have been honoured at a formal ceremony, which has become an important event in Latvia’s scientific community.
BIOR’s recognition among this year’s top achievements represents a high appreciation of the Institute’s researchers’ professionalism, dedicated work and contribution to developing scientifically based solutions of great importance to society.
