2D4PFAS Project Updates: April 2025 – March 2026

During the second reporting period, the 2D4PFAS project team achieved several important results:

A new method for detecting previously unknown PFAS compounds

BIOR scientists developed a new analytical method using HPLC-Orbitrap-MS, enabling the detection of previously unidentified fluorinated compounds in water. The method can detect known PFAS compounds while also supporting the identification of new, previously undescribed substances.

A new method for detecting short-chain PFAS

A dedicated method was developed for the detection of short-chain PFAS compounds, which are particularly challenging to analyse due to their chemical properties. As these compounds are becoming increasingly widespread in the environment, reliable and accurate detection is essential.

PFAS levels in Latvian drinking water assessed

Drinking water samples collected across Latvia over the past two years were analysed for PFAS. PFAS compounds were detected in 59% of the samples, generally at very low concentrations. Overall, 98.6% of the samples complied with the requirements of the European Union Drinking Water Directive.

New materials tested for PFAS removal from water

In cooperation with the German Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), new sorbents for removing PFAS from water were tested. Nearly 300 water samples were analysed at the BIOR laboratory. The results will contribute to evaluating the efficiency of the newly developed materials and their potential for PFAS removal from water.
