During the ninth stage of the Project No.1.1.1.1.1/16/A/258, studies were performed on the effectiveness of the developed quinolone detection method for the testing of poultry meat samples. No quinolone residues were detected because the sensitivity of the method used was <5 ng / g, while at the same time the maximum residue level (100 ng / g) can be detected very quickly and accurately. These studies will continue at the next stage of the project with meat samples from poultry previously treated with quinolones.

Performance testing, organized by the European Reference Laboratory (Berlin, Germany), successfully demonstrated the accuracy of the pharmacologically active substance detection method developed by the project using a high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry system. A report of the results shows that the Institute BIOR successfully identified 100% of all substances included in the testing.

In the ninth stage of the project, studies have been launched on the use of ICR-MS methods for detecting veterinary medicine residues in waste water. Potentially this method can be used to control wastewater from slaughterhouses or food establishments on the use of veterinary medicines.

In the study of biological contaminants at the ninth stage of the project, studies were carried out on the detection of pathogenic bacteria in germinated seeds and microgreens, as well as in a fish processing plant. The results were collected and presented at the 14th International conference of the Latvian Agricultural University “Students on Their Way to Science”. At this stage of the project, work was started on the potential of digital PCR for the detection of food pathogens in various food products. The design of the study has been developed to test the sensitivity and accuracy of this method for the detection of the presence of specific DNA of different pathogenic microorganisms.

To ensure the transfer of knowledge gained from the project and to inform the food business operators on the results, a seminar “Latest quality control methods in food production” was organized at the Institute on 21 May. The seminar was attended by a wide range of stakeholders from both business and food control institutions.

The total project costs: EUR 448 530,90 (the planned ERDF aid (85%): EUR 381 251,26 and state budget aid (7, 5%): EUR 33 639,82). Implementation of the project is scheduled at the duration of thirty months (period: 01.03.2017. – 30.08. 2019).
