Progress report of the eleventh period of the post-doctoral research project 1.1.2/VIAA/1/16/204

The eleventh stage of Project of European Regional Development Fund “1.1.1.2. “Post-doctoral research aid” “One Health” multidisciplinary approaches for epidemiology and prevention of selected parasitic zoonosis (OMEPPAZ), (1.1.1.2/VIAA/1/16/204)” senior researcher Dr. boil. Gunita Deksne were implementing following actions:

1) A presentation was prepared for medical professionals about the results of the postdoctoral research on the most common parasites (Echinococcus spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Trichinella spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis) in human medicine within the context of “One Health” in Latvia for the conference “Diseases and symptoms caused by parasites, protozoans, bacteria and viruses ”, which is available on-line at www.kursiarstiem.lv starting from June 6, 2020.

2) The article “Toxoplasmosis and Related Risks to People in Latvia” (authors: G. Deksne, S. Gintere, A. Krūmiņa) was published in the April / May 2020 issue of the National Medical Journal “Latvijas Ārsts” to inform Latvian medical professionals about toxoplasmosis, the prevalence in humans and animals in Latvia, about the potential transmission routes and risk factors, as well as on the clinical manifestations of the disease in humans, diagnosis and treatment.

3) A molecular epidemiological study on Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystsis spp. occurrence in the muscle tissues of wild and domestic pigs, the possible mixed infections, as well as the genetic diversity of the parasites is ongoing.

Cooperation authority is State Education Development Agency. The duration of the project is 36 months. The total cost of the project is EUR 133 806, 85% of which is financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
