Institute "BIOR" is conducting a survey of Latvian food producers on methods and problems related to the labeling of foodstuffs and the preparation of nutrition information. Such information has not been summarized in Latvia so far and will help to substantiate Latvia's position in the European Commission on food labeling, nutrition labeling and tolerated fluctuations in products.

The Regulation on the indication of the nutrition labeling of foodstuffs (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council) does not stipulate how the manufacturer must obtain information on the nutritional value of a product that is produced; therefore, in practice, various solutions are used: laboratory analyzes, calculation methods, even the use of other nutritional value of a similar product. In addition, it should be remembered that it is not always possible to provide an identical production process or raw material with a completely unbalanced nutritional value, so a single measurement might be insufficient to develop nutrition information. Together with a survey of manufacturers, samples of different food groups will be analyzed in laboratory, and factors that affect the accuracy of the information given on the label shall be analyzed.

The results of the study will be valuable to the producers who, when assessing the situation, will be able to decide on the best solution for determining the nutritional value of the product and consumers as they will be informed and educated on the reliability of food labeling information and the Ministry of Agriculture for policy planning and to the controlling institutions.

Project supported by Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia.
