Hatcheries implement fish resource renewal program and release at least 2 600 000 fries of various species of fish and 11 600 000 fish maggots in waters of Latvia annually. Fries of steelhead trout, sturgeon, sander, freshwater cod, and carp are cultivated for the needs of private hatcheries and pond owners.

Fish Farm “Tome”

is the largest salmon smolts breeding place in Latvia and in the Baltic Sea region. The fish farm implements the state fish resource renewal program by cultivating fries of salmon and sea trout for the population of the river Daugava. The fish farm releases about 550 000 salmon and sea trout smolts, 150 000 salmon and sea trout single summer fries, 350 000 sander and whitefish fries in waters of Latvia annually. Fries of steelhead trout sturgeon and carp are cultivated for the needs of private hatcheries and pond owners. Apart from that, breeding bank of brown trout, whitefish, sturgeon (sterlet, Siberian sturgeon, and bester) is maintained and cultivated for further maintenance of fries.

Hatchery “Dole” is the only specialised vimba fry breeding place in the basin of the Baltic Sea. The hatchery also breeds whitefish and lamprey fries as well as pike maggots. Fries of steelhead trout are cultivated for the needs of private hatcheries and pond owners. Starting from 2017, the hatchery also breeds pike fries. Currently, the hatchery releases at least 170 000 Baltic salmon smolts and fries, 420 000 vimba and whitefish fries, and 5 000 000 lamprey and pike maggots in the basins of rivers Daugava and Lielupe annually.

The main task of Hatchery “Pelči” is the reproduction of salmon type fish stock of the basin of the river Venta. The hatchery breeds and releases about 200 000 salmon and sea trout smolts and fries in the basin of the river Venta annually. Additionally, the hatchery breeds sander, freshwater cod, carp and steelhead trout fries as well as pike and lamprey maggots.

Hatchery “Kārļi” works for the preservation of salmon population of the basin of the river Gauja. It releases about 200 000 salmon smolts and fries annually. The hatchery also breeds sea trout, brown trout, whitefish, Arctic char and steelhead trout fries.

The main task of the Branch of Hatchery “Kārļi” – Hatchery “Brasla” is the renewal of the resources of sea trout in the basin of the river Gauja. The hatchery breeds and releases in the basin of the river Gauja about 200 000 sea trout smolts and fries annually. The hatchery breeds also steelhead trout fries and lamprey maggots.
