THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE VI-A LATVIA–LITHUANIA PROGRAMME PROJECT LL-00133 “SPPwelfare” HAS STARTED
The Lead partner - Institute of Food safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR" – in cooperation with the Fisheries Service under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania has started the implementation of the project “Latvian and Lithuanian conjunction - Improvement of Baltic salmon and pikeperch rearing methods for more sustainable, resilient and healthy fish populations” (SPPwelfare) within the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027 from March 1, 2024.
The project aims to contribute to the sustainable and cohesive socioeconomic development of the Programme regions by helping to make them more competitive and attractive for living, studying, working and visiting.
In the course of the project, the cooperation of two partner institutions in fields of fish farming and replenishment of fish resources will be strengthened, jointly performing the following activities:
• Transfer of knowledge on replenishing salmon stock and the artificial reproduction of pikeperch, including the study and implementation of practical methods.
• Conducting studies on the effectiveness of probiotics to assess their impact on the growth and survival of salmon and pikeperch. The aim is to encourage the adoption of more sustainable juvenile rearing methods as well as controlling and preventing fish diseases.
• Joint development of the Fish Health Index Model (FHIM) for salmon for a unified and effective determination of the juvenile quality.
• Development of Biosecurity guidelines, based on the specifics of salmon and pikeperch farming, welfare principles and improvement opportunities identified during implementation of the project.
Important information will be exchanged by holding meetings, seminars and conferences within the project, as well as by informing a wide range of society: aquaculture specialists and researchers from Latvia, Lithuania, and other countries, representatives of Ministries and other institutions, fish farmers and other interested parties.
