EFSA Focal Point in Latvia

On 25 February 2013 the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment BIOR was appointed as the National Focal Point of the EFSA in Latvia on technical and scientific matters by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

The EFSA is one of the leading risk assessment and risk communication body in the world, which was establishedto improve EU food safetyand thereby to provide a high level of protection of human health and consumers’ interest in relation to food.

EFSA was founded in 2002. The legal basis for establishment of the EFSA was provided by theRegulation (EC) No 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 January 2002 laying down the general principles and requirements of food law, establishing the European Food Safety Authority and laying down procedures in matters of food safety.

The role of the national Focal Point is to act as a collaborative centre in Latvia to promote gathering of data and exchange of information between the EFSA and relevant bodies in Latvia, including risk managers, national authorities, stakeholders and research institutes un the fields of risk assessments on food and feed safety, animal and plant health and animal welfare.
The tasks for the Focal Point are as follows:
-    to ensure the exchange of information between the EFSA and Latvia concerning  risk assessment initiatives, results of scientific research projects, requests for specific information, as well as with regard to the development of work programs of the EFSA and Latvian competent authorities;
-    to provide advice on actions that could be undertaken by the organisations within the EFSA network, review and updating of the list of competent organisations in Latvia, development and maintenance of the databases of scientific experts and research organisations, and on activities of national experts in Latvia;
-    to provide support on dissemination of materials concerning EFSA, organisation and coordination of the exchange of documentation and information within the EFSA mission, as well as to promote availability of the EFSA opinions in Latvia.
